Research History, Then Become History

Growing up, I didn't view painting as a career choice that would create stability for my future, even though it was something I enjoyed doing and brought peace to my life. I had never met, let alone heard of successful, black artists and painters other than Jean-Michel Basquiat, one of my favorite artists. So after graduating from an art-focused high school, I majored in Graphic Design as a safer creative option. I soon realized I aligned more with the brush strokes and depth of physically painting than graphic designing and turned to libraries and online literature to find more information about the artists who I could relate to, including Kerry James Marshall, Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker, and Charles White. This somewhat through my life path for a loophole. The more knowledge I gathered, the bigger the fire sparked inside me grew. I was ecstatic to know that there were people with similar backgrounds who accomplished things I dreamed about and cared less about designing.

Researching brought a new light and meaning to my artist world. Not only did I want to find more living artists who shared the same enthusiasm, I wanted to positively impact others in the future similar to the artists who came before me, as well. So I incorporated research and practiced different ways of expressing myself into my artist practice in order to do so.

CONTROLLING MY OWN NARRATIVE

I am now in full control of my life path and career choice. I am an empath who’s inner goal is to give feelings to the world through my visual offerings. I believe in the grand scheme of all things. My mother is one of my greatest and dearest inspirations and will continue to live on as my creativity flourishes. One of my favorite quotes is "The goal isn't to live forever but create something that will." I will be a successful Black female painter and inspire other young, Black and gifted artists with my creations. I am empowered and genuinely excited about where I will go and what stories I will cement in history.
