Hone Creativity, Then Share It

Michelle Izquierdo (@michelleizquierdoart)

I used to think being a full-time artist was out of my reach. I always thought I would have a full-time job and maybe moonlight as an artist. When I was younger everyone would say that studio art was a 'less than smart' major and if I wanted to be an artist, teaching art would be the only way I could do it. When I first graduated college, I was an Office Manager at a corporate job and I taught art at night. I got a little taste of artistic happiness while I was living this way but ultimately it was not fulfilling. It was like I was living for the nights and weekends at the studio, being half alive. I was putting on a mask during the day and being myself at night… until the day I got accepted into an art show in London. I figured, ‘let’s go and see what happens.’ London changed the game for me. There I was, this Office Manager showcasing her artwork with a bunch of other artists from all around the world. I truly felt alive and after that show, I never looked back! I started applying to more open calls, teaching classes, painting murals, working on commission, etc. I stopped half-living and chose to be myself full-time.

CONTROLLING MY OWN NARRATIVE

I am now a full-time artist that wears many hats. I live to express myself and have figured out a way to do so that works for me. Ever since I started a vlog of a 30-day creativity challenge last year where I paint on the same canvas for 10 minutes and record my progress, I am connecting more with clients and art lovers. I create pieces that really reflect where I am emotionally. Through this process, I welcome people into my world and show them a glimpse into my brain and my aspirations.

I truly believe that creativity is not lost, but gained, the more you share it by doing so. The more open we are with our process, the more people can connect. It’s definitely not always easy but I’ve never been happier. I enjoy the challenge even though there is a lot on my plate. To overcome the feelings of doubt and loss of creativity, I truly lean into my vulnerability. My practice has expanded. My work is more honest and consistent now. My creativity is constantly growing from the feedback I receive from the community around me. I am growing as an artist a little each day and creating the best version of my authentic self.
